The city of Detroit is honoring legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell on the first day of summer.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing last week issued an official proclamation making Monday “Ernie Harwell Day” in the city.

The longtime Tigers broadcaster died last month from cancer. He was 92.

Bing said in the proclamation that “Harwell’s distinctive voice not only announced baseball games, but also signified the beginning of summer.”

Today is the first day of summer.
