Christine Beatty is moving to Georgia, where she has a limited opportunity to do some private business consulting work, but has greater hopes for a future far from Michigan and her infamous link with former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

“If she wasn’t depressed, she wouldn’t be human,” her lawyer, Mayer Morganroth said. “She lost everything — her job, her prestige, her home, the town she loved. But this move is about survival.”

Kilpatrick’s former chief of staff was convicted and jailed, along with Kilpatrick, on criminal charges stemming from the text message scandal that toppled his administration. Both were charged in 2008 with lying under oath to hide their extramarital affair.

Her lawyer said Beatty is still in town, but told him today that she will not talk to the reporters gathering outside her west side home to watch movers load a truck with her belongings. Morganroth said his client will be leaving soon for an undisclosed city in Georgia.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Timothy Kenny late last month signed a request from the Michigan Department of Corrections probation department that transfers supervision of Beatty’s five-year probation to Georgia authorities.

Morganroth said Beatty has been unable to get work in Michigan. He said her family has supported her while she has managed to land only some minor consulting business.

“She can’t get anything around here,” Morganroth said. “Every time she gets close to something around here, something pops up in the media and renews the controversy. These prospective jobs disappear. At least there, she isn’t so notorious and in the limelight. Her kids won’t be reading about their mother all the time.”
