DETROIT ((WXYZ) — A massive sinkhole has taken over a portion of Detroit’s downtown district. The street gave way last night near the Lafayette and American Coney Island restaurants.

It happened late Wednesday night, on a section of West Lafayette between Shelby and Griswold and right in front of the recently demolished Lafayette Building.

A strong smell of gas brought out utility crews, but dinner was still being served at the two restaurants until the gas and water were eventually turned off.
