Earlier this year it was announced that writer, comedian, and radio host D.L. Hughley had signed a lucrative deal with Netflix to produce a stand-up special with the King of Comedy star. On Tuesday, Netflix released the special which is titled “Contrarian”, and in it D.L. dives into everything from the #MeToo movement to #BlacklivesMatter. D.L. bears it all in the new special, and recently in an interview with Uproxx, he talked about some of the content of the special as well as some trending topics that seem to be bubbling in society.
In the interview DL opens up about how comedy can be relieving in polarizing times like these when everything from the President of the United States to local police have people nervous and combative. He brings up trending topics like the growth of the LBGTQ movement as well as the thriving #MeToo movement as topics which can benefit from humor and levity, something in which comics have always supplied throughout recent history.
“I think we have changed the world in a lot of positive ways, through a lot of humor. Look at what happened to the LGBTQ movement. It wasn’t the marching and the appeals to people. It was everything done in entertainment. It was the Modern Family, Ellen and Glee. It was people laughing and being able to see humor from a different kind of perspective, a perspective that changed their outlook. It’s what humor has always done.”
The comic has been very busy over the last few years, not only has he been working on this special with Netflix but he also has a daily radio show which is syndicated through our station here in Detroit. In June he released he released his second book How Not to Get Shot: And Other Advice From White People. In addition to this D.L. is becoming more popular by the day as a commentator and political advocate so we have nothing but praise and kudos to send D.L.’s way, make sure to check out his special on Netflix and tune into his show which airs daily from 3PM to 7PM.
