Leaping over life hurdles is what Russell Harris has always done. As a youth he battled through homelessness, learning disabilities, and family issues before he found his way, which led him to being the first male in his family to graduate from High School and college. In College, he became a leader on and off the track where he was a three-time All-American in hurdles, while serving as the founder of a male minority support group on campus, The Brothers.

After earning his Bachelor’s degree from Wartburg College, Russell went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Organizational Management and Leadership from Ashford University- Forbes School of Business. Russell then went on to Stanford University, being 1 of 100 students selected globally to participate in their Summer Institute for General Management.

His experience in helping high school students discover their passions and find a path to college led him to the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in Detroit MI, where he eventually became the principal at the age of 25. Under Russell’s leadership, over 98% of the class of 2016 & 2017 graduated and gained acceptance to post-secondary opportunities which made Jalen Rose Leadership Academy the top open enrollment charter school in the city of Detroit.

His thirst for learning has continued with enrichment studies at the Harvard School of Education, Principal’s Center. In 2017, he became the Chief Dream Director for The Future Project, an organization aimed at unlocking the potential and purpose of students in Detroit. Russell has also recently become the Vice-Chair of the Black Male Educators Alliance, where he focuses on the recruitment, retention, and the development of black male educators. Russell is passionate about helping young people unlock their powers within so that they can one day be able to provide for themselves and the people they love.
