This week the NFL implemented a new national anthem policy that states that any player on the field during the national anthem must stand or pay a fine, but the players have an option of sitting out the playing of the anthem in the locker room.
Many see the mandate only benefiting the owners and takes away from the whole reason the hundreds of players in the NFL started kneeling like former NFL player Colin Kaepernick to begin with, to bring awareness to the killing of unarmed black men by police in the United States.
One team owner, the New York Jet’s Christopher Johnson, told Newsday he would pay any fine handed down by the NFL which would allow any of his players to continue participating in the silent protest during NFL games and not have to worry about repercussions from the team.
President Trump was speaking to Fox News on Thursday (5/24) and said in part that the players should “stand proudly for the national anthem…or shouldn’t be playing. Maybe they shouldn’t be in the country.”
The war of words continues.
