We commend DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital’s highly-skilled staff members from Surgical Services who perform close to 8,000 surgeries each year. To accommodate the high volume of cases, the dedicated staff that runs the “OR” must operate like a fine-tuned machine to keep their cases running smoothly while keeping the patients cared for and safe. Specially-trained OR nurses, techs, clerks, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, residents and physician assistants not only interface seamlessly with each other, they must work in concert with other departments.
As surgery methods change, the OR staffs must also do continuous training to keep up with the evolving technology now available at Sinai-Grace. Surgeon-assisted robots and 3-D imaging are now routinely being used for many surgical procedures, including colon cancer, prostate surgery, knee replacements, fibroid tumor removal, and hysterectomies. Surgeons who are trained in using the robotic-assisted tools say that robotic procedures often equate to less scarring, less time on the operating table, more precision, and faster recovery. Multi-dimensional imaging technology is also helping physicians map out the surgery in real time for blood clots, spine problems, and brain tumors. But, along with all this advanced technology, comes advanced training.
“Our OR Nurses are required to do ongoing education to keep up with the evolving surgical technology. We make safety and continuous education one of our top priorities, setting aside one day every week for education and in-service,” said Cecilia Sheikh, the Director of Surgical Services at Sinai-Grace. “For example, we acquired Makoplasty in September 2016 so the team that works with the robotic surgeons went through extensive training before the first case.”
Thank you to all the surgery staff and support teams for your service to our patients and your commitment to evolving as surgical procedures progress!
