WNBA stars Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson-Griner have a lot to celebrate in the coming year, and it’s not their recent nuptials or the upcoming basketball season. Johnson-Griner hinted on Instagram that she was expecting a child – and her team, the Tulsa Shock, confirmed the news Thursday.
The big announcement came on the eve of the WNBA Tip-Off 2015, and the news was picked up by several outlets, including Sports Illustrated. Tulsa Shock President Steve Swetoha issued a written statement released to the team’s website, which also noted that the forward will miss the entire season. Swetoha expressed congratulations for Johnson-Griner and her wife.
“Being a professional athlete that plays year round, there is never a perfect time to get pregnant without putting my career on hold.
The entire process, from learning our fertility options, to making the sacrifices necessary nine months before this child is born, is merely preparing me to become a great wife and an even better mother. The hardest part is sitting out this WNBA season, being away from my loving teammates, and not being able to be on the court and play for our devoted fans.”
Johnson-Griner posted an adorable Instagram photo featuring a cake in the shape of an oven with a bun appearing from the rack. The mother-to-be didn’t add much in the way of words, but the excitable hashtags of “#SUCCESS” and “#BLESSED” explained all they needed to.
Griner, who plays the center position for the Phoenix Mercury, has yet to make any public comment.
The pair was married last month, just a short while after they were both arrested for attacking one another. Last week, Johnson-Griner seemed to suggest in an exclusive interview with SI.com that she was defending herself from Griner.
