Months after their widely-seen kiss during the NFL draft, Michael Sam, who became the first openly gay player in the league last year, is engaged to his longtime boyfriend, according to reports.
The New York Post‘s Page Six quotes an unnamed source saying that Sam, who turned 25 on Wednesday, and Vito Cammisano became engaged during a current vacation in Europe.
The two have been posting images from their travels to Spain and Italy on social media, with Sam sharing a picture of the two together at the Colosseum in Rome, and another on Twitter on his birthday from Vatican City: “Beautiful view from the very top of St. Peter’s. Suddenly 25 doesn’t feel so old!”
That same day he Tweeted, “Thank you to every single one of you for the birthday wishes, it truly means a lot.”
Sam and Cammisano were students together at the University of Missouri, where Sam became the SEC’s co-defensive player of the year in 2013 before being drafted last May by the NFL’s St. Louis Rams. Video of Sam receiving the congratulatory call from the Rams during the league draft included a celebratory smooch from Cammisano, a former athlete on the university’s swim team.
“While this is disappointing, I will take the lessons I learned here in Dallas and continue to fight for an opportunity to prove that I can play every Sunday,” Sam wrote at the time on Twitter.
