dior johnson 5After having a good junior season and an even better off-season, Southfield (Mich.) 2015 safety Dior Johnson has verbally committed to the Wake Forest Deacons. He announced the news of his decision on Twitter, Tuesday evening.

The three-star recruit, chose Wake Forest over offers from Illinois, Indiana, Cincinnati and Northern Illinois, among others, telling Allen Trieu of that Wake Forest’s great academics and coaching staff  helped to seal his commitment to the Deacons.

“What made me pick Wake is, I like the coaches a lot.” Johnson said to Allen Trieu of “I went down there and I like the turnaround going on because most of the coaches are new. They came from Bowling Green and they know what they’re doing. They were the school recruiting me the hardest and I really like Wake.”

“One factor that played a big part in it was Wake Forest is an academic school and my parents want me go somewhere that’s good academically. Other than that, the campus and atmosphere are nice and I wanted to go somewhere and make a name for myself and get a new feeling.”

Although he has the potential and skill set to play corner-back and safety, Johnson tells that he will be playing strong safety during his time at Wake Forest.

“They told me they’re going to use me as a strong safety and they have all young players down there, so I can come in and be a factor.” Johnson said to

This is obviously a great pick-up for Wake Forest. At 6-foot-2, 195-pounds, you can always count on Johnson to walk in with an eager competitive edge. He always looks forward to playing the best and he always welcomes a challenge. On the field, Johnson is an impressive big hitter, who understand how to wrap up his opponent and bring them down. If he catches you in the open field, you better brace yourself, because I can guarantee you that he is going lay a big hit on you.  He is just as impressive in coverage, due to his athleticism and solid hands, Johnson has shown the ability to make the big defensive plays in the air.

Going into Wake Forest, I have no doubt that Johnson will provide excellent leadership and versatility to defensive coordinator Mike Elko’s 4-2-5 scheme, that will allow him to make plenty of plays in the open field.

However until the time comes to officially join Wake Forest, Johnson is focus on his upcoming senior year with the Southfield Blue Jays. If you don’t know anything about Blue Jay football, just know that Johnson is more than ready for his senior season and he is especially excited about the new and talented secondary that they have this season, which of course he is a part of.

“I’m pretty geeked about it.” Johnson told Allen Trieu of “I just made my commitment and now I can focus on my senior year and team and how we can go far in the playoffs. The first game should be really hyped. We have me, Ray (Buford), Vonte (Ginwright), we just got a transfer from Pontiac, so we’re going to do big things and keep people watching us. I’m going to put on and do my thing and be ready for this year.”
