buford 2Southfield (Mich.) defensive back and wide receiver Ray Buford, may have missed most of his junior football season with a knee injury but he never let that hold him back from being recruited by top colleges.

Since getting back on the field, Buford has performed on a consistently high level, earning offers from Boston College, Toledo, Ohio, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Akron, Buffalo and Bowling Green.

Well after driving out to Minnesota on Saturday, with his parents for a recruiting visit, Buford received his first Big Ten offer from the University of Minnesota, where he committed right on the spot, making him the eighth overall commit and second defensive back to join the Gophers’ 2015 recruiting class.

According to Allen Trieu of, the Minnesota Gophers had a chance to see Buford at the sound mind sound body camp recently and after seeing him perform, they began their heavier recruitment of him.

“They said they heard about me before sound mind, sound body camp and then once they saw me there they liked me a lot there and wanted to watch a little bit more film and basically sealed the deal for them.”

Although, some will say that Buford had plenty of time to make a college decision, he told Allen Trieu that he likes the opportunities for him at Minnesota, one of them being early playing time.

“I just like the opportunity I had there.” Buford told Allen Trieu of “I had the opportunity to come in and have a chance to play early at a Big Ten school so I had a chance to play against top competition and I like the atmosphere around there and how it is around there at Minnesota.”

If you haven’t already figured out, this is a good grab for the Gophers. Going into Minnesota, Buford, is capable of playing both defensive back or safety and making an impact at either position.  At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, Buford has the instincts, technique and overall size to play safety but because of his time at wide receiver, he also has the hands, speed and overall ball skills, to make an impact at defensive back.

Regardless, of what position he plays, I stand by the fact that the Gophers got a steal in their recent commitment from Buford. I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see Buford and the rest of the Southfield Blue Jays this upcoming season. Last time I talked to Buford, he told me, his main focus going into his senior season, “is to win a state championship” and if I know one thing about Buford, he doesn’t take his goals to win a state championship lightly.
