A Wayne Co. prisoner is on the run after police say he assaulted a deputy and escaped from the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice Monday morning.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said that 25-year-old Derrick White attacked a sheriff’s deputy, stole a uniform and fled the area after carjacking a driver near the downtown courthouse.

Police say White, who is described as a black male, 5′ 6″ and 155 pounds with dreadlocks, was driving a gray minivan, which has since been recovered not far from the courthouse.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says White is considered armed and dangerous.

FOX 2’s Amy Lange says White was in custody Monday morning for sentencing on a carjacking charge.

Craig would not comment on the deputy’s condition. Witnesses tell FOX 2 they did see a sheriff’s deputy being taken into Detroit Receiving Hospital earlier today.
