Amid chants of “Run, Benny, run,” Benny Napoleon kicked off his bid to become the city’s next mayor tonight, saying he’s the leader the city needs to turn itself around in a time of deep crisis.

“Detroit is not my hobby; it is my home,” Napoleon said in a clear dig at one of his top challengers, former Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan.

Napoleon said it’s unacceptable that city leaders have let Detroit deteriorate so badly and its financial condition get to decline so much that the state would appoint an emergency financial manager to take over.

Calling on his roots in Detroit, Napoleon called for efforts to make the city’s neighborhoods livable and sustainable and said he would work to recruit business, improve education and provide job training for workers to reduce the city’s unemployment level.

No more business as usual,” he said. “In a Napoleon administration, we will cut through all the red tape” that has made it difficult for businesses to relocate in the city.

Several hundred people packed the Crystal Ballroom at the Masonic Temple for Napoleon’s campaign kickoff. Messages from speakers were about rebuilding the city, boosting public safety and taking shots at Duggan, who moved into Detroit from Livonia in 2012.
