Ferndale — Police said Tuesday they have rounded up several suspects in the Sweet 16 birthday shooting incident that left one teenager dead and another hospitalized in critical condition.

The shooting occurred at a VFW Hall on Vester shortly after midnight on Dec. 19 when several members of two rival gangs from Royal Oak Township and Detroit crashed a birthday party being held for two Ferndale High girls, police said.

Among the uninvited suspects was one who fired a blast from a sawed-off shotgun, wounding two teenagers from the township and Detroit, who also had not been invited to the party.

All those in custody were arrested Monday night and were wanted on arrest warrants unrelated to the murder investigation, according to a release issued by Ferndale Police Lt. William Wilson. The matter will be sent to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible warrants on Thursday, Wilson said.

Wilson said several citizens and area police agencies worked together to accomplish the arrests but that anyone with additional information about the shooting or suspects is asked to call police at (248) 541-3650.
