DTE Energy now offers a free “Outage Center” iPhone application, available on the iTunes App store, which will allow customers to view data and report on power outages in their communities.

This outage application interfaces with the Outage Center hub on DTE’s website, where customers can view outage data in real time along with advice on how to handle storms and a frequently-asked questions section.

The Detroit-based company is among the first U.S. utility providers to offer this mobile service and is working to provide a version of the software for Android phones.

The outage application is one of company’s many tools available to customers, said Patrick Duffy, DTE Energy’s Customer Service Manager.

“With the summer storm season upon us, extending the outage reporting tools to the Iphone was a great place for us to start,” Duffy added.

In a press release announcing the application, the power company said that it hopes to broaden its service in reach and capability with the mobile Outage Center.

Additional mobile applications are being developed for the power company that will allow customers to check account balances and pay bills via their mobile devices.
