Some metro Detroiters may need to change their Memorial Day weekend plans to include other activities than the beach, as several Lake St. Clair beaches are closed to unsafe water conditions.

According to the Macomb County Public Health Department (MCPH), Metropolitan Beach in Harrison Township and Blossom Heath and Memorial Park Beaches in St. Clair Shores are closed and have issued an “unsafe to swim,” warning to beach goers.

The warning is typically associated with high levels of E. coli bacteria. Click here to find out more about the risks associated with E. coli.

Representatives from Metropolitan Beach released the following statement on the MCPH website, “To continue to protect the public health, due to the heavy rainfall and ongoing sanitary/ combined sewer overflows, management has agreed [the beach] will remain closed until further water testing has been conducted.”
