DETROIT — For the first time in its 100-year history, the Detroit Zoological Society will have official mascots to serve as goodwill ambassadors for the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Zoo. “Junior Z” and the “Zooper Heroes” are friendly costumed characters that will greet visitors and pose for pictures at events at the Zoos and in the community.

Junior Z is a young zookeeper character – a male and female version – dressed in a zookeeper’s uniform and safari hat. The Zooper Heroes are caped renditions of a polar bear and giraffe. Additional Zooper Heroes will be introduced in the future.

Junior Z and the Zooper Heroes will make their public debut at the Detroit Zoo’s Bunnyville celebration from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, at Rackham Fountain (weather permitting). The mascots will initially be seen at Zoo events and will eventually make appearances at community events and schools throughout the region.
