You may have unclaimed property or cash waiting for you. Here’s information on how you can collect it.

Under the current law, different properties have different timelines. Right now cashier’s checks, certified checks, registered checks, expense checks and pension checks have a five year claim time. Money orders 7 years and traveler’s checks 15 years. But now a new bill has been passed that will put a 3 year timeline on certain claims.

There is no timeline to claim property. Owners or heirs can always claim their property by making a claim to the Unclaimed Property Division.

Excess monies that are not claimed go into the General Fund. The state can use that money to pay down Michigan’s deficit.

To find out if you have any unclaimed property, call (517) 636-5320.
