Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as Seasonal Depression or “The Winter Blues”, affects about 6% of Americans, according to American Academy of Family Physicians. Most SAD sufferers notice the onset of depression around the same time every winter. Below are 5 natural ways to treat SAD. The effectiveness of each method varies from person to person.

1. Light Therapy

There are special lights for seasonal depression sufferers that emit light similar to the sun’s, called seasonal affective disorder lights available for purchase. The lights act as a natural mood enhancer, especially when you have some Vitamin D in your system. You won’t risk skin cancer, plus you can use them at home. About 45 minutes of this light on the eyes will help you feel better.

2. Eat Healthy

Eating healthy meals regularly has been proven to naturally enhance your mood and give you energy.

3. Pick Up A Hobby

Begin this step after you have started doing either of the previous methods because i.t’s not easy to start a hobby if your feeling depressed or fatigued.

4. Get Some Exercise

Exercising is a great way to uplift your spirits and give you more energy and motivation. However, in the winter months, it’s not as easy. If you can’t afford to invest in a home gym or a gym membership, you can always begin a regimin at home.

5. Seek Professional Help

If none of the above methods made a difference for you, and your depression is affecting your daily life – especially year round – it is recommended that you should see a physician. You may need counseling or medication, you may have a chemical imbalance in your brain that no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to do anything about. A psychiatrist can evaluate your level of depression and decide the best way to treat it.
