The Dramatics originally formed in 1962 as the Dynamics. They changed their name by 1967, when they garnered their first minor hit single, “All Because of You.” However, the group did not break through until their 1971 single, “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get,” which broke into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #9.[1] Their first million selling disc “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get” was awarded gold disc status by the R.I.A.A. in December 1971.[1]

Their members at this time were Ron Banks, William “Wee Gee” Howard (who died of a heart attack on February 22, 2000 at age 49), Elbert Wilkins (who died of a heart attack on December 13, 1992 at age 45), Willie Ford, Larry Demps and keyboardist James Mack Brown (who died on November 28, 2008 at age 58). Shortly after the success of their first album, Howard and Wilkins left the group. They were replaced by L.J. Reynolds and Leonard “Lenny” Mayes. Through the 1970s, the group appeared on Soul Train and continued to have hits, including the #1 R&B hit, “In the Rain”, “Toast to the Fool”, “Me and Mrs. Jones” (originally by Billy Paul), “I’m Going By The Stars In Your Eyes” and “Be My Girl.” In the meantime, Howard and Wilkins formed a Dramatics splinter group, and came up with a minor R&B hit, “No Rebate on Love.” To distinguish themselves from this group, the core group temporarily dubbed themselves ‘Ron Banks and The Dramatics’. Howard eventually returned to the group for two albums, Somewhere in Time: A Dramatic Reunion and Positive State Of Mind, before departing again.

The Dramatics also were guests on the Snoop Doggy Dogg song, “Doggy Dogg World”. The song appeared on Snoop’s 1993 debut album, Doggystyle.

The group continues to tour and presently consists of Banks, Reynolds, Ford, Winzell Kelly and Michael Brock, who replaced Mayes (who died of lung cancer on November 8, 2004 at age 53).

The Dramatics were also mentioned in the novel The Algiers Motel Incident by John Hersey (ISBN 0-8018-5777-5). They were staying at the Algiers Motel, following a performance at Detroit’s Fox Theatre, during an alleged murder by members of the Detroit Police Department, which was one of the incidents which sparked the Detroit Riots of 1967.

The Dramatics “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get” appeared in the 2005 documentary Sunday Driver, as well as the movies, Wattstax and Darktown Strutters, and the 2007 Petey Greene biopic, Talk To Me.

Ron Banks was the last of a dying breed. Not too many singers or groups had that kind of impact on me like The Dramatics did. The music and the memory will live on. God Bless Ron and his family.

Mr. Banks was a great entertainer. I’ve seen in concert numerous times, and was never disappointed. My father was a HUGE fan of The Dramatics. He passed away 2 years ago this month. It brings a smile to my face to know that my father is probably challenging Mr. Banks to a sing off as we speak! Rest well, Mr. Banks.

Ron Banks will be sorely missed. I grew up with their music listening as my father was chilling out. Their music got me through some tough times and I have pleasant memories from seeing them perform live. When I first heard of his passing, I just broke down and cried. I did not have that reaction to Michael Jackson. To the Banks family: Ron Banks was loved by me and my fellow Detroiters. We lost a true gem in him. My prayers will be with your family during your time of grief.

Ron Banks will be truly missed. In the seventies I grew up listening to The Dramatics and when I was thirteen I met Ron Banks in St. Louis, Mo.after a concert. My cousin Ralph was traveling with them and he brought Ron to our family party. In December of 2009 The Dramatics performed in St. Louis and I met Ron again after 30 years and I got a chance to take pictures and talk with him, that was one of the greatest pleasures. In our home he’s a legend and was a wonderful person. We’ll truly miss him and I’m glad I got to see him again. I had just lost my brother in February of 2009 and he and Ron could have been twins, I also lost my mom in June of 2009 and meeting Ron and the guys gave me a reason to smile. Now I feel like I lost my brother all over again. The pain is truly deep. My prayers will be with the family, and remember the Lord will bring you through, I’m a firm believer of that. God Bless

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Ron Banks personally. He and his family lived next to me years ago. He was a huge celebrity, but he was very down to earth. He had barbeque’s often, which he invited us over or to swim in his pool. He was a very likable and fun loving person who loved to joke with you. He will be missed; but I’m glad to have had the pleasure of knowing Ron Banks, a legend.

Ron Dean”Banko”Banks lived up to his song Whatcha See is Whatcha Get and then more than some. I met Ron through my father John”Tootie”Browning they worked on tours together. Later i had the Honor to manage the Dramatics there was never a DULL moment they were like a dream family(or should i say a handfull). Banko showed me a lot of things i did not know about the business. My most memorable moment was hearing Ron sing Gospel songs he was truelly anointed so much so people would get goose bumps start weeping and shouting.I asked him to record a Gospel song he said he was working on it. I said then you should be on the Bobby Jones Show. Hate you all missed out on hearing his voice change like an Angel. I would encourage him to be in Plays,T.V.and Movies. He was “DRAMATIC” and Blessed to have a beautiful close family in this business who stuck with him until the end. Much Love we miss you already. Remember: What goes on in Vegas Stays in Vegas. my deepest condolence goes out to Ron Banks Family. I have known Ron since our days at Atkinson Elementary School, when we were both on the Safety Patrol on the corner of Justine Street, it was quite the crew on the Safety Patrol…..Ron Banks….Paul Seal who later played with the San Francisco 49ers, and Glen Doughty who later played with the Baltimore Colts…..we had the time of our lives joking daily and cappin’ on each other! I am hearing all the talk of how Ron Banks formed the Dramatics while at Jr. High…….well….it started a LOT earlier than all that really….Ron had a group in the 3rd grade?……We got to watch them rehearse for our talent show and the auditorium teacher showed them a stage move of coming out on stage…..with their arms in a synchronized motion imitating a choo-choo train……(like the O Jays in Love Train)……it was a moment in HISTORY as it should be known that the Dramatic’s “moves” were originally taught to them by an auditorium teacher…..i was there…..i saw it firsthand! I have been particularly impressed with the work Ron was doing for the creation of a Soul Hall of Fame……he was in the creation process all the way to the end……an artist of LIFE…..who will be sorely missed! RIP RON!
