Radio One’s Comedy Explosion, hosted by Hot 107.5 and Kiss 105.9, will star Rickey Smiley and George Wallace at the Fox Theatre on Saturday, September 29 at 8 p.m. Special guests will include Dominique and Jay Anthony Brown of The Tom Joyner Morning Show and George Wilborn of The Michael Baisden Show. The event will be hosted by Kool–Aid of Radio One.
Comedian, television host, and top rated nationally syndicated radio personality, Rickey Smiley, is one of the few “clean” comics that is amongst the upper echelon of contemporary great comedians. Smiley’s audiences are treated to such original characters as “Bernice Jenkins” (AKA Granny Swims, Ms. Johnson or Mrs. Francis), “Lil’ Daryl,” “Rusty Dale” and “Beauford.” Bernice Jenkins has a Grandson named Rufus, who’s a stereotype modern day “Gangsta”.
Smiley is the host of the Rickey Smiley Morning Show; that broadcasts locally on Hot 107.5. Every morning, Smiley brings to life his many beloved characters and bits, such as, his famous prank phone calls, “Paternity Test Tuesday”, “Wake Up Wednesday” (political talk), “Gary’s Tea”, “News You Can’t Use”, or “The Joke of the Day”. The Rickey Smiley Morning Show is a blend of laughter, serious discussion of social issues, political awareness, and community outreach.
George Wallace derives his comedy from everyday experiences and simply shares moments of life. He finds humor everywhere he turns–from media to relationships to dialogue cliches. At all costs, he avoids standard opening lines and is known to be an ace at reading an audience. Among other comics, Wallace is known as “the guy who can roll the room over if it’s dead.”
Wallace began his career in comedy as a writer for “The Redd Foxx Show” and made a huge splash on the stand up scene as one of 150 competitors on the cable television special The Big Laugh Off. Wallace captured first prize, which included club gigs all over the country. Wallace’s most recognized material is his “Yo Mama” and “I Be Thinkin” jokes and has won an American Comedy Award for “Best Stand Up Comedian” after being continually nominated four years in a row.
Currently, Wallace is Las Vegas’ resident comedic headliner. In 2004, George appeared as the headlining star of his own show at The Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas for a 30 day run. “Sin City” showed its admiration by extending George’s contract indefinitely.
