Detroit — The Salvation Army this morning erected a huge red kettle and shield, the nonprofit’s symbols, at Campus Martius Park as it seeks to raise a targeted $7.8 million this holiday season.

Beginning on Friday, 350 of the familiar small red kettles will be at malls, grocery stores and other locations across Metro Detroit to gather donations for use by the Salvation Army locally, said Jason Hale, a development officer with the nonprofit.
“All the money raised stays here,” he said. “It goes for utility assistance, rent assistance, coats for kids.”
The fundraising will continue through the end of January, Hale said. On Nov. 19, Quicken Loans will match the day’s donations up to $25,000, a move Hale said he hopes other companies and corporations will also commit to.
