Add this to the list of things we used to do all the time as kids that have now been totally RUINED. A new study by a company called Healthy Stuff is out to destroy the classic summer tradition of drinking water out of the garden hose. Because drinking that water COULD KILL YOU.

–They tested 90 different garden hoses and found that ALL 90 contained levels of lead and phthalates that were higher than the safe levels set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission… I don’t even know what that is!! And 33% had higher lead levels than the safe levels set by the federal Safe Drinking Water standard.

–By drinking out of a hose, you MIGHT end up ingesting chemicals that can cause liver problems or even cancer.

–Of course, you’d probably have to drink A LOT of water out of a lot of hoses to have that happen. A few drinks won’t kill you. And I’d REALLY rather not encourage today’s kids to skip water drinking and go for soda instead…. So… get outside and play!!

I just read an argument and its rebuttal on the subject of best friends and it really made me think: is it bad to just have one best friend or is having a lot of close friends the better way to go? While from first glance, the article about the “horrors” of a child having a “BFF (Best Friends Forever)” seemed just like an overprotective parent trying to micromanage their child’s life, but even so, I could see some clear points in there that struck a chord with me. Limiting yourself in any way, shape, or form in terms of who you consider a “friend” is limiting how you see the world. Situations with friends can change on the instant, so why put yourself in a position where if one friend leaves forever, you have no one to fall back on? It’s good to be open to whomever you meet and any potential friendship that comes your way. I see the other view, too, though, that unless you spend time nurturing a friendship, you never truly become close to anyone. Which is more important or is there equal weight in both arguments?

How To Make Your Child’s Summer Reading Fun

I know that throughout my life, I’ve had both scenarios – one best friend that I could talk to about everything, as well as multiple close friends with whom I felt a strong connection to. I also have those acquaintances that I only say hi when I see them and have small talk, but we don’t have a strong connection like I have with other friends. I truly feel like you can’t limit yourself to who you consider a friend because things can change in an instant and who sticks out all the bad moments is truly someone you can trust. Personally, I just have a group of friends I can call my confidants, but also groups of people I just have fun with. Why does it have to be all or nothing? There’s always a range of people that you share certain things with, a rolling river where trust comes in different forms. When there’s one person that you can share everything with and they’re not judgmental, that’s definitely “BFF” material. However, you can have multiple “BFF”s and feel a strong connection to them all, but in different ways.

I don’t think friendship can be so concrete. Children should be allowed to befriend whomever they want, as long as they’re safe and are allowed to learn what it means to be a friend through relating with others. For me, it wasn’t until the end of middle school and early high school that I learned the difference between true and superficial friendships. I don’t think it would be as clear to me as it is now if I hadn’t had that learning experience and gained a firsthand understanding of interpersonal relationships. I don’t even regret the moments of clarity I had to have as to who was toxic and who wasn’t because it’s helped me in the present day to differentiate who I want to keep in contact with. Although it’s important for parents of younger children to reinforce connections, by a certain age, the parenting reigns need to be pulled in and kids should learn on their own to read social cues. It’s invaluable human experience to be able to relate with others and figure out who fits with you. As I wrote this, I thought of an anonymous quote I once heard, “People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime” and in looking it up, I found a link to what exactly that means. It’s interesting to think of friends in those categories instead of “best” or “close” or “acquaintance.” The “lifetime” friends are the ones that are your “best,” or the ones that are always there for you. However, there are always others that are harder to categorize and sometimes it’s best not to since life is ever-changing.

I know a girl who I sort of knew throughout elementary and middle school, but it wasn’t until high school and college that we became part of a group of close friends. When parents try to dictate the friendships of their children, that could be stunting the natural growth of their child’s connections. Whoever is meant to be there at certain times in a person’s life is never set in stone, but in the end, it’s the journey that matters. That might sound cliche, but why label friendships anyway? Maybe it’s just better to let friendships fall into place by themselves, rather than rank the level of connection you have with individual people.

Couples Alert!- Have you ever heard of the term the “7 year itch”? A recent UK study conducted for Warner Bros to promote the film, “Hall Pass” in UK theaters discovered couples tolerance for one another has decreased from 7 years to 36 months.

The study identified a list of things that couples acknowledged were annoying and bothered them about their partner. It revealed the longer couples were together, the harder its been to keep the “spark” going.

A list of the top ten everyday passion-killers were the following:

Weight gain/lack of exercise, 13 percent

Money & Spend thriftiness, 11 percent

Anti-social working hours, 10 percent

Hygiene issues (personal cleanliness), 9 percent

In-Laws/extended family – too much/too little, 9 percent

Lack of romance (sex, treats etc.), 8 percent

Alcohol – drinking too much, 7 percent

Snoring & anti social bedtime habits, 6 percent

Lapsed fashion-Same old underwear/clothes, 4 percent

Bathroom habits – Stray nail cuttings etc., 4 percent.

Do you believe this applies to couples here in the U.S.?

Dr. Mae Jamison is the first female African American astronaut in space. With an extensive high level of technical education she is encouraging parents to get their children back to basics so that they can “expand and explore their universe while outdoors.”

Astronaut Dr. Mae Jamison

(GlobalBreakingNews.com)

- American scientist, Dr. Mae C. Jemison, wants parents to allow their children to get dirty: “Preventing children from touching bugs, snails and dirt limits their ability to explore their world,” Dr. Jemison believes.

Dr. Jemison is the first African woman to go into space. She served as a science mission specialist on NASA’s space shuttle, Endeavour, in 1992. During her space voyage, Dr. Jemison conducted experiments in material science, life science and human adaptation to weightlessness.

What was her favorite experiment? Frog embryology; on Earth, frogs’ eggs rotate with the dark hemisphere pointing up. If that rotation is inhibited, tadpoles are born malformed. Dr. Jemison’s mission was to determine if weightlessness affected the migration of cells within the egg.

The result: successful fertilization in space. No malformed tadpoles out there!

Dr. Jemison is a powerful advocate for science literacy; which explains her disdain for computer games and social networking.

“Video games and social networking inhibit children from using the full scope of their imagination. Kids are too centered on themselves,” Jemison observed.

Consequently, the high level of abstract thinking required for children to become successful scientists isn’t developed optimally.

Her solution: “Take the toys and widgets away from children and let them go outside and play for a little while. Young people must go outside and experience the world in a different manner because one cannot understand the world from a computer.”

How will that help? Children are forced to expand and explore their universe while outdoors: “They focus on the answers to the problems of the world around them,” Jemison said

Children exploring their world promote scientific literacy which is essential for increased innovation. “Innovation doesn’t just happen; innovation is based on basic scientific research which requires exploration and finding answers to problems in the real world,” according to Jemison.

And, what is the role of parents in promoting scientific literacy among their children? First of all, according to Dr. Jemison, “parents must not be uncomfortable with their children exploring their world.”

Additionally, given the fact that children make decisions about their life’s goals by the time they are eleven, “parents must instill in their children, from an early age, that science and education are important,” Dr. Jemison advised.

USA Today reports that despite being the family man, the title of the new Broadway play that marks comedian and actor Chris Rock‘s theatrical debut hardly suggests family entertainment.

Yet Rock’s desire to spend more time with his family was a big factor in his decision to take on The Mother —————— With the Hat, which begins previews March 15.

“Stand-up is fun, but you have to travel,” says Rock, 46, nibbling on fresh fruit at a restaurant near the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, where Hat opens April 11.
