When Soul Train launched in 1970 here in Chicago, voiceover work was by Joe Cobb (another WVON radio personality), who continued to be “the voice of Soul Train” for many years along with another Chicago radio legend: Sid McCoy. Cobb was the voice that called out “Sooooooooul Train” on each episode. One more Chicago connection: the first Soul Train theme song was a funky instrumental called “Soultrain” that was by a local outfit called the Ramrods; and the song that took viewers to commercial breaks was “Familiar Footsteps”, a deep, doo-wop drenched slow jam by Chicago’s Gene Chandler.

The Collaborative Group, a Birmingham-based nonprofit dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship, Monday announced the launch of Challenge Detroit, a national initiative aimed at helping to revitalize the Detroit area by attracting innovative, entrepreneurial thinkers to bring new ideas and contribute their intellectual capital to the community.

Challenge Detroit will select 30 innovative leaders throughout the United States to live, work, play and give in Detroit. Participants will live in Detroit, supported by a $500-a-month housing stipend; receive a $30,000 salary to work at one of the top companies in the region; experience the city through organized social and cultural events; and, participate in monthly team challenges, in partnership with area non-profits, designed to positively impact the city and region.

“Challenge Detroit is founded on the belief that 30 of the best and brightest, passionate, hard- working and inventive leaders of tomorrow can make all the difference in the world, let alone a city,” said Deirdre Greene Groves, executive director of The Collaborative Group and Challenge Detroit. “We are working with top companies, non-profits and leaders from the greater Detroit area to develop this exciting social initiative that will positively impact the future of Detroit and the region.”

Participants will work with non-profits, including Tech Town, The Detroit Regional News Hub, and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan on initiatives such as developing opportunities for social entrepreneurship; addressing urban issues pertaining to regional planning; transportation and education; and distributing food to those in need. Each participant will also work at one of 30 Challenge Detroit host companies, which include ePrize, Quicken Loans, Marketing Associates and Strategic Staffing Solutions.

During their year in Detroit, participants will gain new insights about the city and the greater Detroit region while sharing their story with the world through regular blogging, video logging and social media updates.

“We believe, through their experiences with Challenge Detroit, these individuals will be intrigued to stay in Detroit, work in Detroit, bring new ideas to Detroit, even start their own business in Detroit, and by doing so, they will have a positive influence on our region today and in the future,” said Groves.

Challenge Detroit is accepting applications through March 16, 2012 and the year in Detroit will begin in August 2012.

We all saw the heartbreaking video of actress Maia Campbell on the net. According to the clip, she was a cracked-out druggie who had been diagnosed with bi-polar/manic depression. Fast forward to 2012… Maia is back, she’s cleaned up her act and is speaking out about her past and what she’s struggling with and what lies ahead.

What’s going on in her life.

I’ve been sober for two years, and a lot of people can’t say that. I’m timid, shy and broken a little bit by some of the responses [online], but then again so much support from the people saying “No! She’s none of that.” Real friends stepping up … And just showing me who the real people were in my life. It helped me find myself and find out that there’s a real true artist inside of me–that no matter what obstacles may come, he’s not going to let you fall, and he’s not going to let you down.

I started ministering to myself and looking at my heart … Finding my voice … And it just made me stronger. If it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger. Like Drake says, “It’s far from over…” I listened to the music that people were making, and it kept inspiring me. I started making music, and I just stepped out on a limb. My mom died … So much has happened. I miss people in my life. I miss LL [Cool J]. Debbie Allen came back to the community … And for once so many miracles. I swear so many miracles!

On the state of her career and the youtube videos that surfaced:

I went on to do movies, and nobody talked about it, and that hurt me. I did a movie called ‘Rim Shop’ after Katrina had happened in New Orleans. We went down there, and that place looked a mess, seriously. We shot a film out there just to help those people, to bring revenue in and just show our support to their situation. Then, I did a gospel kind of Tyler Perry play called ‘Friends and Lovers’.

Actress Paula Patton admits she had a tough time losing her baby weight. The actress who gave birth to her son Julian Fuego late last year had to be in the best shape of her life to star opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, a feat even she calls “crazy.”

“It was really the most grueling and one of the hardest things I’ve done,” Patton, 36, tells PEOPLE about her intense training while attending Thursday’s Reebok Crossfit Sport of Fitness campaign launch in New York.

“I worked out for two and half hours, six days a week for a couple of months. It was so hard!”

To stay motivated, “I would never cry in front of the boys, but inside I was hurting and a little depressed,” she admits.

Patton now works out for one hour five days a week, doing such activities as running, weight training, Pilates and yoga with her husband, singer Robin Thicke.

“We started doing it together years ago,” says Patton. “I’m much more flexible than him, but he’s much stronger than I am. So it’s really fun to workout together. We balance each other.

“Becoming a mother is the best thing that’s happened to me.

“He’s at the age where he’s talking. He’s not doing soliloquies, but he’s saying Mama, Dada, car and dog. His vocabulary is growing every day. He makes me so happy.”

We’re not sure if we feel sorry for Paula…if we had our own personal trainer and nutritionist, we too could lose our baby weight in record time.

Don Cornelius’ Ex To Pocket His Life Insurance Policy

Dornelius and his ex-wife, Viktoria Chapman Cornelius, did not end their union on good terms. Towards the end of their marriage, the late television icon was convicted of domestic abuse. She was also believed to have pepper sprayed him multiple times. Though the two finalized their divorce in 2009, Chapman will be the one who pockets from two of his life insurance policies totaling $300,000 in benefits.

TMZ reports that there’s a provision in their settlement agreement that says Don has to make Viktoria the beneficiary of both of his life insurance policies. And under Cali law, if the policyholder commits suicide within two years, the company can void payment. Don passed that mark, as per the agreement, it’s Viktoria’s money.

ABC’s Extreme Makeover Weight Loss edition is looking for new people in metro Detroit to feature in the reality show that follows amazing tales of weight loss. If you are looking to improve your life, you are invited to apply.

The show’s producers are looking for men and women who need to lose at least 50% of their body weight.

A casting call will take place this Saturday, February 4, at the Gardner-White furniture location in Canton. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 4:00 p.m.

If you make it onto the show, trainer Chris Powell will come to your home and work with you to lose weight and change your life for the better over the course of a year.
