FERNDALE, Mich. — Ferndale police officers fatally shot a 55-year-old man who they said tried running over officers during a chase.
The incident began with a traffic stop early Thursday morning.
Officers said when they pulled the man over, they noticed the man had marijuana in his glovebox.
The driver sped off and a police chase ensued.
Police said they were able to box the driver in at Woodward Avenue and State Fair, but he reportedly tried to run down officers.
Police opened fire and shot the man.
“I was right here at the corner of State Fair and Woodward at the gas station and I saw the Ferndale police chasing this guy and he hit the pole and the next thing you know they jumped out and shot him and said he was a dope man,” said witness Lotitha Hawthorne.
The victim’s name has not been released.
Police continue to investigate the fatal shooting.
