Detroit — The 52nd annual Target Fireworks extravaganza exploded a barrage of color into the sky just after 10 p.m., delighting about a million spectators who lined the riverfront and spread through downtown.

The steady stream of spectators, many with families, who swarmed Hart Plaza for the perfect spot to watch the pyrotechnics adjusted their gazes and unleashed a chorus of “oohs” and “ahhs.”

Among the crowd was longtime attendee Patricia Taylor, 18, of Detroit, who came with her 9-month-old daughter, Yolanda.

“I think she’s going to like the pretty colors,” said Taylor, who also was joined by her sister, Courtney McCullum, and father, Cortez McCullum. “I don’t think she’s going to be scared. She likes everything.”

Antoine Turner, 23, a car wash owner from Harrison Township, and his fiancee, Chelsea Adams, 22, who first saw the fireworks together five years ago, came for a romantic evening and another awesome display.

“We’re looking forward to the finale — the boom, the boom,” Turner said. “The fireworks start off slow then go really fast.”

Kevin Ridgeway, 51, a substance abuse counselor in Detroit, said he last saw the fireworks live in 1994. He came Monday because he was off work and wanted to see them close up again.

“I run into a lot of people I haven’t seen since high school,” he said. “The fireworks bring everybody together. … That’s what has me smiling.”

And on the ground, despite the kid-friendly atmosphere, a man was seen stripping off his clothes near the plaza fountain just before 9 p.m. and running naked through the crowd, hopping barricades, witnesses said.

Police tackled the man and took him into custody. Mostly cloudy skies hung over the river, but the National Weather Service predicted thunderstorms arriving hours sometime around midnight, after the display.”There’s a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms into Tuesday night,” meteorologist Amos Dodson said.
