A Washtenaw County sheriff’s deputy said he was only trying to help a homeless couple by taking them to a shelter when they stole his patrol car.

Ruth Rinesmith said she called the sheriff’s office when her daughter, Cathy Hahn, and her son-in-law, Christopher Hahn, refused to leave her home in the 100 block of Chestnut Boulevard Wednesday evening.

“I was scared because they were banging on the door and threatening my son and me,” Rinesmith said.

Rinesmith said the couple is homeless and she didn’t want them staying in her home.

“He was actually attempting to actually not make an arrest but to be helpful by calming down this family altercation. And then transporting the two individuals from the house to the actual homeless shelter,” said Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Director of Community Engagement Derrick Jackson.

Jackson said the couple was put in the back of the patrol car while the deputy talked further with Rinesmith.

“My son looked out the window and they was driving that way with the car,” Rinesmith said. “He

    took off.”

Rinesmith said the deputy had a shocked look on his face when he realized what had happened.

“He couldn’t believe it either. Then, he just ran out,” she said. “I feel sorry for him, that he had this happen to him.”

Jackson said although the situation could be perceived as comical, it’s not a laughing matter.

“Obviously it’s not something that happens all the time, but it’s taken very seriously,” he said.
