A $10,000 donation is always cause for celebration, but when Ann Serra, director of marketing and development for Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, noticed that the envelope she had just opened included a personal check from President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, she picked her chin off the floor and began to whoop and holler. Soon she was high-fiving her colleagues who had gathered around her desk.

The check, drawn on the Obamas’ bank in Chicago, arrived Jan. 4. Mosaic officials called the White House and were able to confirm that the gift did come from the Obamas, though further details are sketchy. The theater, which has become a national model for youth development, probably got on the president’s radar when members performed for then-candidate Obama and his wife at a campaign event in Detroit in 2008.

“We don’t know what motivated the gift, but we’re grateful,” Serra said.

The White House declined to comment on the gift.
