After earning an offer from Ohio State on Monday, University of Detroit Jesuit (Mich.) 2016 point guard Cassius Winston has earned another offer this time from Maryland. Winston’s head coach Pat Donnelly announced the news of Winston’s latest offer from Maryland on Twitter.
I honestly can’t say I’m surprised by Winston latest offer Maryland. Winston, reportedly visited Maryland earlier this month, and according to 247sports.com, Winston’s uncle, William Harber said that the Terps impressed the young rising star.
“I think it really is on his radar and I think he is very outspoken about the honesty the coaches showed,” Harber said to 247sports.com after the visit to Maryland. “It was an eye-opening experience for him.”
Then if that’s not enough, it’s well established that Maryland really wants to land some elite guards. They offered 2015 four-stars Eric Davis and Glenn Watson in July, and now they are starting to focus on the next round of talent, starting with Winston.
It’s clear to see why the Terps are interested in Winston, for starters he is everything that you want in a point guard at the next level, and he has shown that on a consistent basis.
Plus, as I mentioned before at 6-foot, Winston may not be the biggest or the quickest but he has a very high basketball IQ and well-rounded skill set which allows him to be one of the more productive players in the state of Michigan. As a creator, he has always displayed great court vision and he has tendency to make the toughest pass look easy. Offensively, he has an explosive crossover and once he gets past the first line of defense, he is more than capable of taking the ball to the rim and finishing strong against contact but he also has a smooth mid range jumper that he can hit on a consistent basis.
While he still needs to work on his defense, there is no doubt that Winston is one of the hardest working players in the state. Back in July, U-D Jesuit coach Pat Donnelly spoke to Jake Thielen of MLive.com, telling him that Winston has helped set an example for his teammates this summer by spending his off-season training to improve his game.
“His work ethic is unmatched,” Donnelly said to Jake Thielen of MLive.com last month. “He’s in the gym every morning at 7 a.m. to work on his ball handling and perimeter skills. He’s committed to improving his game and the team.”
Although I don’t like to be redundant, there is no doubt in my mind that Winston will continue to earn more offers. As of right now, he holds offers from Michigan State, UMass, Iowa State, Michigan, Ohio State and when you add his newest offer from Maryland, you have no choice but to call his offer list impressive. Since he is also gaining interest from Harvard, Davison and Georgetown, don’t be surprised if he earns another offer before the month of August is over.
