tyriq thompsonAfter much speculation on where Detroit King (Mich.) 2015 linebacker Tyriq Thompson might land, we now know that Thompson will take his talents to Michigan State to play under head coach Mark Dantonio.

Allen Trieu of Scout.com confirmed the news first.

While some may not be surprised by Thompson’s decision to attend Michigan State, there is no doubt that this is still a big grab for Dantonio and his Spartan defense. Especially when you consider the fact that Thompson’s father Clarence Thompson was an All-Big Ten defensive back at the University of Michigan in 1995. In fact, at one point many people expected that Tyriq might even follow in his father’s shoes at Michigan.

Nevertheless, after fielding offers from a number of schools including Michigan, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Nebraska, along with others, Thompson decided to create his own path and start a new journey with the Spartans, telling 247sports.com, that Michigan State feels like home.

“It feels like home,” Thompson told 247Sports. “Coach D knows what he’s doing.”

“I didn’t feel any pressure from them and they allowed me to take my time,” Thompson said. “It’s like family. The guys are bought in to what Coach D talks about. The people are great and I’m looking forward to forging great relationships.”

It appears Michigan State’s family mindset isn’t the only thing that impressed Thompson. During an interview with Allen Trieu of Scout.com, Detroit King assistant coach Terel Patrick added that another reason Thompson likes the Spartans, is because of their recent defensive success and how he would fit into their scheme.

“They sold him on a couple of things. Football wise, he could see himself playing in that system. It’s an attacking style of defense similar what he’s used to in high school. He’s asked to blitz, play in space, and it’s also a four-man front, so he’s not taking on 315-pound guards all game at 3.5 to four yards.

As I said before, this is great grab for the Spartans, at  6-foot-1 and 220-pounds, Thompson is already a great linebacker mainly due to his great work ethic and pure talent but beyond his talent, he is also someone who the Spartans can build a team around.

Keep in mind that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Detroit King assistant coach Terel Patrick told Allen Trieu of Scout.com that the Spartans are getting a rare talent and rare person in Thompson and I couldn’t agree more.

“He’s the kind of kid on the high school and college level — whatever level of football — he’s a kid you can build a program around,” Patrick said. “You want to have him as an example you want in your program. He’s accountable, selfless, there’s not a selfish bone in his body. He does a lot to help his teammates academically, on the field understanding assignments.

“He’s easily the most well-rounded kid I’ve ever coached.”

“To me, they got a guy who could project to all three spots. Him having started his high school career in the secondary, he still has way above average cover skills and the frame where he can still put on more weight. You add the intelligence on and off the football field, and he can be on the field for three downs and also project to three linebacker spots.”

Overall, I would call this a great grab for the Spartans, they are gaining a great linebacker who has the skill and work ethic to become one of the most well-rounded linebackers in the Big 10 and in the country. Most importantly, the Spartans have a gained great young man who will bring maturity and leadership beyond his years.

Don’t believe me? Don’t worry you will find out soon, because Thompson also told 247sports.com that he plans to enroll early and go through 2015 spring drills.

With Thompson now in the fold, the Spartans now have four in-state prospect in the class of 2014 and a total 13 verbal commitments in the Class of 2014.
