It was a huge night for Black film.
Steve Mcqueen’s “12 Year’s A Slave” was bestowed the highest honor of the night , “Best Picture,” at the 2014 Academy Awards. We’re still speechless as the historic moment sets in!
Will Smith presented the statuesque trophy to Brad Pitt and McQueen, who gleefully embraced the award while the rest of the cast of the movie took to the stage. “12 Years A Slave ” breakout star Lupita Nyong’o and “12 Years A Slave” writer John Ridley won for their roles in the emotional film just moments before. Chiwetel Ejoifor was shut out by Matthew McConaughey for “Best Actor” for his leading role as Solomon Northup but did snag the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award.
McQueen dedicated the award to Solomon Northup, who originally wrote the book “12 Years A Slave” chronicling his life during the years he was sold into slavery.
