Former Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh tells 7 Action News that he has officially resigned from his position on council.

In a phone call to 7 Action News, Pugh said he left Detroit because he was struggling with accusations over an alleged relationship with a young man he mentored.

“I was pretty f—ed up,” Pugh said over the phone today.

The City Council clerk’s office confirms that they received a resignation letter just before 3:00 p.m. today. They say it was not delivered by Pugh himself.

Pugh says he now intends to lay down roots in either New York City or Atlanta.

The former television news anchor says he does not want another on-camera job, but he does plan on doing some freelance media-related work. This could include voiceovers, writing scripts and media relations, he said.

Pugh said he wants to live a normal private life and does not want to be a celebrity.

When asked whether he would be open to doing an interview, Pugh declined.

Pugh went missing from city hall over the summer after the 7 Action News Investigators contacted him about allegations of an improper relationship involving a student he mentored.

Since he left Detroit, Charles Pugh has been spotted inside a Seattle Starbucks coffee shop and – earlier this week – at a New York City event for journalists.

The former council president has been missing since requesting a medical leave from his position. However, Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr denied the leave and stripped Pugh of his pay and authority.

However, Orr could not kick him off of council.
