DETROIT (WWJ) - The Southfield Freeway in Detroit has reopened following a fatal pedestrian accident Wednesday morning.

Michigan State Police Trooper Eric Whitcomb said the accident happened around 5 a.m. in the freeway’s northbound lanes near Plymouth Road.

“It appears as though a pedestrian was crossing M-39 and was struck by a passing motorist,” he said.

The woman, who was not identified, was likely killed instantly. Whitcomb said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

“The motorist did stick around. He was just traveling on his way to work and there was a pedestrian that he saw and he was unable to stop in an appropriate time and struck her,” he said.

Whitcomb said at this point, they can only speculate as to why the woman was trying to walk across the freeway.

“There were no vehicles found in the area, so they were crossing the freeway for an unknown reason,” he said.

Northbound M-39 was closed for nearly two hours as police investigated, but has since reopened.
