No matter how young they are never underestimate your kids’ abilities to understand and reason. I’m guilty of this as well. As adults sometimes we are too quick to brush kids aside thinking they are too young to say anything of value and therefore don’t need to be heard. But out of the mouths of Babes if we listen we might learn something about ourselves and our kids.
This morning, I got a quick and brutally honest lesson from my 9 year old son, Trey.
While dropping him off at school here’s how the conversation went.
He say’s, “mom, I want you to look in the mirror…do you notice how your teeth are not so white, they’re sorta that off white color. Almost yellow, ya know? Well that’s because you drink wayyyyy too much wine. You should stop, because soon your teeth will become black, eventually they’ll fall out and you’ll die!”
He then goes on to say, “I love you and I don’t want that to happen to you, so I’m just telling you what I learned. Please don’t be upset with me.”
Seriously, how could I get upset? What he said was so profoundly true. At that point I really had no words at all. Only, a shout out and BIG Thanks to the “Drug Prevention Program” that he’s as been taking this week at school!
