About 3:40 p.m., during dismissal, DPS officers heard shots fired in the area of Wyoming and St. Maria, said DPS Police Chief Roderick Grimes. The officers found the student with the injury to his foot. The student was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital by EMS.

“Witness states a fight broke out at that location, then unknown subjects drove by and fired shots from their vehicle then sped off …” Grimes said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for the Educational Achievement Authority, which operates the high school, said officials do not know what prompted the incident, which occurred about a half mile from the school.

Grimes said no suspects were in custody and an investigation was ongoing.
