Designer Catherine Malandrino has always stayed true to her goal of showing a woman’s strength and femininity, and for Fall 2013 she sent out an intricately detailed collection that celebrated their individuality. Malandrino is known for blending the romance and elegance of Paris, with the energy and casualness of the US.

Her inspiration this season was drawn from the art deco furniture designs of French designer Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann which was evident in the long and lean look of her designs, just as Ruhlmann was known for his equisite needle point chair legs. Malandrino was also drawn to bold prints this season, and many of the garments featured triangle, rectangle, and circles seamlessly joined together to create abstract patterns. This design worked especially well on a top and high waisted pant. Laser-cut was a big theme here, and on some pieces Malandrino cleverly used leather diamonds to create a 3-D appearance.

Colors were saturated and most prominent were maroon, a pretty purplely-blue and deep navy. Standouts included a belted leather jacket and skirt, a sleek purple shirt paired with deep olive hued pants, and my personal favorite: a floor length crochet-style sheer dress. Gorgeous. Outerwear was equally as alluring, particularly a long hooded black leather coat and a maroon lazer-cut car coat. Mary J. Blige, a fan of Malandrino (the two have also collaborated on a t-shirt line), would look amazing in a number of these beautifully made pieces.
