    DETROIT -

The Rosa L. Parks Scholarship Foundation says they will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rosa Parks at a gala celebration on Saturday at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

According to the foundation, the gala, hosted by Huel Perkins of WJBK-TV, will feature presentations from speakers who have studied Parks’ life or knew her personally.

    The program will include:

    • Dr. Danielle McGuire, award-winning Wayne State University historian and author of the book “At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape, and Resistance – A New History of the Civil Rights Movement from Rosa Parks to the Rise of Black Power”
    • Dr. Charles G. Adams, pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church
    • Detroit City Councilwoman JoAnn Watson
    • Performances by the James Tatum Trio
    • Readings by Detroit Public Schools students of passages from Mrs. Parks’ memoir

The foundations says they will also use the event to honor former Rosa Parks Scholarship recipients, as many of the scholars, according to the foundation, went on to have successful careers and lives.

Tickets for the semi-formal gala are $75. The event will feature a strolling dinner reception and valet parking, and will take place from 6 pm to 10 pm on Saturday.
