DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital Breaks Ground on $77 Million Renovation

New Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and lobby will dramatically upgrade care and comfort for patients – while also bringing an economic boost to northwest Detroit

DETROIT, Mich.,–  DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital hosted groundbreaking ceremonies for the long-awaited $77 million complete renovation and expansion of its Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Units, and hospital lobby on Friday, March 23. The comprehensive upgrade is the largest private investment in northwest Detroit in nearly a decade.

The ceremonial groundbreaking was led by hospital, local and regional government officials and featured a live musical performance by the Selected of God Choir, a local choir renowned for their appearance in Chrysler advertisements.

“The March 23 groundbreaking at DMC Sinai-Grace will mark a historic moment for both the hospital and the community it has served so well for more than 100 years,” said Reginald J. Eadie, M.D., President of DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital.  “With more than 100,000 patients visiting the ED each year, this hospital has been a vital part of northwest Detroit and its surrounding communities,” added Dr. Eadie, “So, it’s easy to see why this top-to-bottom renovation of the ED, ICU, and lobby is great news for patients and caregivers alike.”

After more than three years of careful planning and design by teams that included physicians, nurses, patients, architects and construction specialists, the massive renovation will more than double the size of the current ED . . . from 25,000 square feet to 59,000 square feet.  The wide-ranging upgrade will also include an expansion of the hospital’s lobby (from 5,100 square feet at present to 18,000 square feet), a new Radiology Department, and complete overhaul of the Intensive Care Unit. The comprehensive upgrade is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.

    The major upgrades will include:

    • 34,000 additional square feet of space in the ED, increasing the total to 59,000 square feet by the end of 2014
    • 42 new “hard-walled” Patient Exam Rooms, to ensure privacy for patients receiving care in the ED and increase comfort for patients
    • New “trauma rooms” to be outfitted with the latest state-of-the art lifesaving technology for major accidents or disasters that require maximum medical care
    • A new fully computerized system for “paperless” electronic medical record-keeping (EMR) throughout all ED areas
    • Expansion of the hospital lobby from the current 5,100 square feet to 18,000 square feet by early 2015
    • Expansion of the Radiology Department from the current 4,700 square feet to 24,000 square feet by early 2015
    • Complete renovation of existing Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and expansion to 45,000 feet by late 2015

The new facility introduces an abundance of natural light and landscaping to help bring the openness of the outdoors inside.  Special attention has been giving to way-finding, including the main entrance and ED entrance, which will be a bright beacon to those arriving at the hospital.  The “creature comforts” extend into the ED, ICU and radiology department. For example, currently the ED has curtained exam areas.  After the renovation is complete, patients will be able to enjoy the privacy of staying in one of 42 new hard-walled rooms.

In addition to dramatically improving and expanding the facilities at Sinai-Grace the renovation will create more than 200 full-time construction-related jobs in northwest Detroit – which is especially good news for a city that’s been struggling economically in recent years.

“Sinai-Grace has long been an essential part of the fabric of life in Detroit – and the massive renovation and high-tech advances that are coming will add world class facilities to its reputation for outstanding patient care,” said DMC President and CEO Michael Duggan.  “DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital’s long awaited upgrade is part of a nearly $850 million investment in the DMC by Vanguard Health Systems.”

DMC Sinai-Grace Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey H. Dawkins described the sweeping renovation and expansion of the hospital’s ED, ICU, and lobby as “a way to not only improve the hospital, but also to energize Detroit. While this renovation will be a boon for both our caregivers and our patients, I believe it will also bring a new spark of energy to northwest Detroit and its residents.”
