Motown Records artist KEM has always made his past battles with drug addiction and homelessness just as much of his story as the romantic lyrics he croons on albums.

His new partnership with The Heat And Warmth Fund (THAW), a nonprofit headed by former Super Bowl Host Committee Executive Director Susan Sherer, is one more example of the R&B singer’s commitment to Michiganders in need. Specifically, this charity raises funds to provide emergency energy assistance to the less-fortunate in our communities. As you may recall, Detroit just returned $9.2M in federal aid that would have helped lower-income people lower their energy bills. Last year, THAW helped pay the bills for 12,000 households.

THAW’s Text to Give plan allows supporters to make a one-time $10 donation that’s added to their cell phone bill. Just text “THAW” to 50555 to give.

“It’s a privilege to be working with THAW this year,” KEM says. “Needless to say, there are a lot of people struggling in our community these days, even more so as the weather begins to change. I take pride in being a part of an organization that assists families and individuals in meeting their utility needs during the winter months.”
According to a press release, “THAW’s budget was drastically reduced due to state and federal funding cuts to energy assistance programs and the organization is working diligently towards short and long term strategies to support those they serve. The “Text to Give” campaign is one part of THAW’s overall fundraising efforts to help make up for part of the budget shortfall this year.”
