DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) – Ford Motor is working on new technology to make cars talk to each other so they can avoid crashes.
The automaker is testing new Wi-Fi technology to alert you to red light runners, a major cause of car accidents.
Other technologies will alert you when someone up ahead stops suddenly, hopefully avoiding panic stop situations.
Ford is working on these technologies with a number of other car companies. Field testing should start next year.
Ford researchers hope to have the new safety systems available within five years. They are also trying to devise a way to retrofit older vehicles so all drivers would be safer.
