This just seemed like a weekend to try something new. We started making a list of some of our favorite brand new spots around metro Detroit and we challenged our Facebook friends to help us find even more. Here it is: 5 New Things You Can Do Around Detroit This Weekend…

    1) See a movie or throw a strike in Royal Oak
Suddenly, your entertainment options have multiplied in downtown Royal Oak. Earlier this week, Emagine began showing the first films at their brand new multiplex on 11 Mile, just east of Main Street. The Emagine Royal Oak complex also features a bowling alley. The whole thing is, of course, just a short walk away from some of metro Detroit’s best restaurants. And movies that begin before 6 p.m. are only $5.
    2) Marvin Gaye is “What’s Going On”
When was the last time you went to the Motown Museum ? Located inside the record label’s old West Grand Boulevard headquarters and studio space, the museum has just opened a new exhibit on the life and work of Marvin Gaye. You can follow the progression of his songs which started out sounding nothing like the tunes we know best.
    3) Check out a brand new play set in 1960s Detroit
Mosaic Youth Theatre is putting on a brand new play this weekend. ‘Northern Lights 1966’ tells the story of a student protest at Detroit’s Northern High School. It’s an original play with music. Several performances take place this weekend inside the DIA’s Detroit Film Theatre.
    4) Treat yourself to some ice cream in Eastern Market
We think Eastern Market needed an ice cream parlor for weekends like this one. The new Mootown Creamery and More has been open for just over a week on the southwest edge of the market. Don’t worry, you’ll feel better about eating that ice cream cone as you shop the market for your fresh fruits and vegetables.

    5) Let them eat cake. In a cup.
Here’s a suggestion that came from one of our Facebook friends: Try Cake in a Cup in Southgate . At first, we thought this would be yet another new cupcake joint. Those are everywhere these days, right? This is something different. The downriver “cakery” offers bakes up a TON of different cake flavors and layers cream in beween and on top. The options seem endless. The website will make you hungry.
