Detroit’s public schools are emptying out their kitchens to raise money.

A news release from the Detroit Public Schools says that a preview of items being auctioned begins Wednesday afternoon. The actual auction will be held Thursday and Friday mornings.

Side-by-side refrigerators, ovens, meat slicers, mixers and trays are among the hundreds of items up for auction. Buyers are expected to include churches, cafeterias, restaurants, caterers and hospitals.

The auction will be held at the Detroit Public Schools Building A and will be conducted by Midwest Auction Sales.

    Hours are as follows:

    Preview: Wednesday, April 27, 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

    Auctions: Thursday, April 28, at 10:00 a.m. and Friday, April 29 at 10:00 a.m.

Thirty schools are slated to be closed this year and two more in 2012 as part of the district’s plan to help eliminate a $327 million budget deficit.

District officials say they hope to turn over 18 of the buildings to charter operators as neighborhood schools. Schools not selected as charters will close.
