A 9-year-old girl slipped a note to a bank teller that said her mother had been drinking and that she didn’t want to be driven home by her, Southfield police said.
Lt. Nick Loussia said Latanya Evans left her daughter at the Bank of America branch on Friday and was arrested nearby, where she failed field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath analysis test.
“Officers said she was having trouble getting out of the car, and her speech was slurred, her eyes glassy and she smelled of alcohol,” Loussia told The Detroit News.
The girl, who was unharmed, was picked up at the bank by her father, the Detroit Free Press reported.
“The girl was very smart and did the right thing,” Loussia said. “She tried to get her mother help, and she refused to get back in the car with her mom because she had been drinking.”
Evans, 49, is charged with driving while drunk and driving on a suspended license. She was released on a $2,500 bond and is to appear in court on Thursday.
She has had five license suspensions since 2000, including two for drunken driving, according to secretary of state records.
Evans didn’t have an attorney, and there was no phone listing for her.
Loussia said after the child gave the note, workers at the bank tried to keep the two from leaving.
“I have to give credit to the bank employees as well,” he said. “They saw the woman was having a hard time parking her car and reported this right away when the girl wrote the note.
“This was a dangerous situation and had the potential for people to be injured. It was a good outcome to a bad event.”
