DETROIT — Spirit Airlines is pushing the fee frenzy with the introduction of fees for carry-on bags — a passenger can pay as much as $45 each way to store something other than a purse or briefcase in an overhead bin.

The policy change goes into effect for flights booked on or after today for travel after Aug. 1. The discounted airline may be the first in the world to charge for carry-on bags. Other ultra-low cost carries such as Ryanair, easyJet, Allegiant and AirAsia don’t charge — yet. It’s unclear if Spirit’s policy change will spur transformations in larger airlines’ carry-on policy.

Spirit said Tuesday that it has dropped some fees and started a fare sale to offset the new carry-on charges.

The Florida-based company introduced the “Penny Plus” fares. The plus means the ticket price will include a charge for fuel, government fees, taxes and now carry-on bags. But the penny fares quickly add up. DETROIT — Spirit Airlines is pushing the fee frenzy with the introduction of fees for carry-on bags — a passenger can pay as much as $45 each way to store something other than a purse or briefcase in an overhead bin.
