DETROIT — The search continues for whoever is responsible for gunning down a teenage girl Monday night in southwest Detroit, and then firing shots Tuesday near a candlelight vigil in her honor.

Detroit police said someone in a gold Toyota opened fire on a parked car near Central and Majestic streets, striking a 21-year-old man and 17-year-old Dashanique Sutton. Police said Sutton was killed by a gunshot to her head, while the 21-year-old is recovering with a gunshot to the leg.

Detroit Police Deputy Chief James Tolbert said investigators believe the shooting Monday was in direct response to another shooting that took place 10 days earlier.

“We’ve got some people who are taking matters into their own hands,” Tolbert said.  Tolbert also said Sutton is believed to have been an innocent bystander, and that the 21-year-old was the intended target. The 21-year-old’s name is being withheld.

Shortly after Sutton’s family held a candlelight vigil Tuesday, police said someone tossed a firebomb into a nearby abandoned house and fired shots from an AK-47. Tolbert said the shootings are believed to be in retaliation between two rival groups.

“We’re looking at a series of fatal and non-fatal shootings that we believe are connected,” Tolbert said. “They should be coming to us, giving us the information and allowing us to do what we do.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Detroit police.
