His ascension to interim chief of police came amid a scandal that brought down his former boss Warren Evans. So now the question is, will Ralph Godbee hear the words “you’re hired.”
On Tuesday Detroit Mayor Dave Bing will announce the next Chief of Police. Godbee has been serving as interim chief since late July when then-Chief Warren Evans resigned. Evans was forced out after Action News broke the story of Evans’ “sizzle” reel – an audition tape starring himself for a reality show.
On Friday night City Council President Pro-Tem Gary Brown told Action News he believes Godbee will be officially promoted to top cop. Brown gained notoriety when we blew the whistle on former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
Brown says the city will have a very difficult time finding an outside top tier candidate because of the current consent-decree agreement, which allows a judge to be involved in department policies and decisions.
Godbee joined the department back in 1987, was promoted to sergeant and lieutenant before retiring in 2008. He rejoined the department in 2009 as an assistant chief.
