The latest back-and-forth between President Obama‘s team and potential House Speaker John Boehner deals with extending the George W. Bush tax cuts, and Boehner’s suggestion that he might back a package that covers only the middle class.

“If the only option I have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, I’ll vote for them,” Boehner said on CBS’ Face The Nation, though he added that the extension should also cover taxpayers who make more than $200,000 a year. “But I’ve been making the point now for months that we need to extend all the current rates for all Americans if we want to get our economy going again and we want to get jobs in America.”

Text continues after Pictures of the week gallery:

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, who has criticized Boehner and the GOP the rich, pounced with a barbed statement: “We welcome John Boehner’s change in position and support for the middle class tax cuts, but time will tell if his actions will be anything but continued support for the failed policies that got us into this mess.”

Today, Gibbs went on morning talk shows to talk some more about Boehner, who is in line to become Speaker of the House if the Republicans win enough seats in the Nov. 2 elections.

“Your poll showed that the second most potent idea against somebody running for Congress would be returning to the Bush policies,” Gibbs said on NBC”s Today show. “We’re going to take the next 50-some days to convince people that that’s exactly what the Republicans are going to do.”
